Category Owner News — June 25, 2023

Greetings Category Owners,

As summer officially begins, we actively move towards the 49th Mary Jane McCord Book Sale!

The EW Committee met and finalized some of decisions around the sale:

Move in begins on Monday, September 11. At 8am, we will need volunteers to help Pam and Sarajane set up the back room, to check the table layout, to put up numbers on tables, to set up the zone signs, to act as zone czars directing movers (we do none of the lifting ourselves).

We expect to finish this part of set up by 3pm. COs can begin setting up their tables at 3pm on Monday, September 11. If the box move-in is completed earlier, we will let you know via email.

Set up will continue until 2pm on Thursday, September 14. COs are welcome to come to Opening Night to manage their tables and assist customers. There is no charge for you to be in attendance.

Opening Night hours are from 4pm to 8pm, an hour shorter than last year.

We will not be having a silent auction this year.

After Opening Night, we will set up the Banned Books and Staff Pick tables near the entrance. If you need a list of banned books for your category, please let the chairs know.

There will be a TV set up by the pillar near the front entrance to display the names of event sponsors and table donors. If you wish to be a sponsor, the donor sign up link is already live on our website.

Things to note as you get your category ready for the sale:

Each table can accommodate 15-19 boxes of books, above and below the table.

Are you on target for the number of tables you have at the sale? Donations are way up and we are getting more large donations. If you are having trouble keeping up with your category, please let us know that you need help as we have great “roving scanners” to help you.

The Holiday category is getting very few books, so please remember it exists.

Container space is at a premium as unscanned boxes are stored in Container 3 with the X boxes and the X boxes are overtaking the unscanned books. We already have one completely full container, so we need to rid ourselves of unscanned boxes of books as soon as it is feasible.

Remember, it costs $5 to move a box to EW and $2 to dump a box after the sale. Choose your books carefully. Your table only looks as good as your worst book.

Many of you have adjusted your pricing, but a reminder that the only things we should be taking to the sale for $1 are mass market books and pamphlets.

Donald recently sold a signed mass market book for $95, so remember, they may have value too.

As always, thank you for the work you do–you are what makes this organization work!

Have a great summer–and shout out if you want help!
